From my reading of the Letters to the Editor, I see the frustrations of many that a Democrat couldn't get elected dog catcher in this city, county, or region. It is so bad that our governor has to appoint them to judgeships in order to give them any kind of power base. Thirty five years ago, I remember living in the most conservative state, in the most conservative county, and in the most conservative city. Everybody loved the mayor. Everybody knew he was a Democrat, but registered as an Independent to get elected. Being a Democrat was a political kiss of death.
I moved from the west side six years ago. Back when the housing market was booming, I bought a very modest home. I was told that anything less than $300,000 was considered a dump. So, I guess I lived in a really bad dump. Since the Democrats didn't see a tax they didn't like, my property tax went from $900 to $2,700 a year in four short years with no end in sight. I could see that I couldn't live there on my modest retirement. I sold and moved out here just before the housing bubble burst.
