I cannot comprehend the loss of a child regardless of how that death comes about. I also cannot comprehend how a parent deals with the tragedy while waiting for all the facts to be made public.
Equally hard to comprehend are individuals that may or may not be part of the community that raise the tension by acting as instigators and prodders, raising the rhetoric and breaking laws by attacking the police and looting public and private property.
It is sad but it must be true that as yet we are not a nation of one people, even though much progress has been made over the last 200 years. It would appear to me that every one of us must step forward and play a role in order to be one nation. There is a lot of laziness and take-it-for-granted attitudes in our country I guess because, in general, we abound in food to eat, places to live and toys to play with.
For too long "we the people" and those we elect have ignored our inner cities and some rural areas where there is massive poverty and poor education that has bred a generation of young people in many ways that are bad for them and bad for the country.
It is time to address these issues head on and it all begins with us because it is clear our leaders will not step forward unless pushed.
