I read the story "Across the Spectrum" (TCH, Aug. 10) with more than a little interest. I am a community volunteer for a non-profit organization call Washington PAVE (Partnerships for Action. Voices for Empowerment). This state-wide organization works as advocates for special education students and their parents with dealing with schools and provide them guidance on state and federal laws concerning special education. All volunteers have had kids who have gone through the special education system. Volunteers are with the parents and student at the meetings where a student's individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed.
PAVE volunteers are not lawyers and cannot give legal advice, but are there to support the parents and student and to offer suggestions based on their training and experience. You can find out more about PAVE at www.wapave.org.
