A letter on (TCH, Aug. 3) said police need training. Did you know that if a knife-wielding suspect and a police officer, with gun holstered, are standing 21 feet apart, the suspect can get to and stab the officer by the time he draws his weapon and shoots? Why not try talking to officers who have been in life-threatening situation and see their side? Have you ever been in a life-threatening situation? I have and your most basic instincts kick in.
The man with the knife may have been mentally ill, but he's still dangerous with a lethal weapon in his hand.
The author say officers need to be reminded they're not military warriors. I challenge anyone to spend one shift riding with a peace officer to see how warrior-like they've had to become to deal with the scum out there. Maybe working with local leaders to get more help for the mentally ill would be better than judging an event we know nothing about.
The Washington State Patrol other law enforcement agencies should conduct the investigation, as they are the professionals.
Never miss a local story.
