In response to the letter from Mark Verwest (TCH, July 15) regarding gun ownership and responsibility, what he says is all well and good, but the facts and reality tell quite a different story. Where do the people who are doing this shooting in schools, colleges, hospitals, theaters, drive-bys etc. get the guns they use to kill innocent people? I can say without a doubt in my mind that the founding fathers who wrote the Constitution did not have in mind allowing the mentally ill and violent criminals to have guns.
If the people he writes of care so much about the gun (or guns), why then are they so adamant about background checks.
Allowing gun sales (and, yes, giveaways) to anyone, anywhere is certainly not being responsible.
I hope he and everyone else, for that matter, read the article on page A7 of the Herald (Voices) on July 15. The author of that made more sense than any thing I have ever read about the subject.
Again I say, "there is none so blind as he who will not see."
Have you checked your covered wagon wheels lately, Mr. Verwest?
