Again, local law enforcement chose to use deadly force in our community. This subject deserves to be discussed, rigorously reviewed, and never should outcomes be taken for granted. I can't help but wonder if we, as a community, are doing enough to make sure every resident is safe, even someone committing a crime.
Rational thinking implores many to ask, with all the non-deadly choices of force available, why are these options not being used in recent incidents? And, if deadly weapons are used, why not a non-lethal shot, especially when only a knife is the threat and there are multiple officers? It is only natural to ask these questions -- especially when local law enforcement is asking for more. Good programs will be helped with a proposed safety tax -- like local drug courts -- but something has to change with the rising use of deadly force. Maybe not this time, but who knows, when this force may be used on you or your family.
Without all the facts, it is not fair to automatically blame any officer or condemn any specific incident, but concerns and questions should be addressed.
