Jim Stoffel's one-sided "In Focus" column in the July 20 Herald was so outrageous it made my blood boil.
Israel is entirely within its rights to invade Gaza and destroy Hamas. Imagine if a neighboring country within 20 miles of the United States' largest city elected a terrorist government with the avowed mission of destroying the U.S. and killing all Americans, and they started firing rockets into the U.S. every 10 minutes.
We all know very well the expected response to such outlaw behavior. The president would warn all civilians to leave the target area, bomb the place into rubble, roll tanks and kill anyone who didn't immediately surrender. Civilians who stayed and died would be declared collateral casualties of war. Those who protected fighters would be considered enemy combatants.
Hamas has been firing rockets into Israel from behind skirts and cribs for years, killing civilians and forcing schools and businesses to close. Why should Israel's response be any different from ours?
Mr. Stoffel's column was pure propaganda for Hamas, a self-declared terrorist organization that duped Gaza residents into "governing" them but whose real mission is the complete and utter destruction of Israel and the death of all Jews living there, regardless of the price Palestinians must pay.
That column never should have been published in a reputable American newspaper. This is not responsible journalism. Shame on the Herald for serving as a terrorist mouthpiece.
