Pit Bull Terrier. Staffordshire Bull Terrier. American Staffordshire Terrier. These breeds and other "pit bull types" are considered "potentially dangerous animals" by the municipal codes of Kennewick and Pasco. However, many residents claim they are unaware these laws exist or how to comply with them. Tri-Cities Animal Shelter & Control Services (Animal Control) plans to change this, and not only for law enforcement purposes. Animal Control hopes an increase in dog owners' education will lead to a decrease in the number of situations in which they have to seize residents' "pit bull" type dogs on short notice.
As part of an initiative to promote community education of local animal laws, Animal Control plans on partnering with the local dog training business Speak Dog to offer discounted dog training classes. These classes would be aimed specifically at educating pit bull owners and preventing this noncompliance which ends often badly for owners and dogs.
Dog owners interested in learning more about this dog training class can find more information at www.speakdogtricities.com or by calling Speak Dog at (509) 531-1130.
