Our outgoing U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings has often expressed support for a Manhattan Project National Monument to include B Reactor. But he has not been able to get a bill through Congress to get this done. Instead of urging the president to use the Antiquities Act to establish the park, Hastings instead recently voted to gut the Antiquities Act, even though it has been used by almost every president to protect unique areas. For instance, George W. Bush used the act to establish a Marine National Monument near the Hawaiian Islands. President Clinton used the Act to establish the Hanford Reach National Monument. The Republican party's vote to gut the act is a reaction to President Obama recently establishing a national monument on the northern California coast.
The Republicans suffer from ODS -- Obama derangement syndrome -- that causes them to go nuts whenever the president does anything constructive. Hastings suffers from this severely. But since no strong Democratic candidate has announced plans to run for Hastings' seat, those of us who are still sane need to scrutinize the Republican and Independent candidates to make sure they will do things we need and not just react negatively to everything President Obama does the next two years.
