West Richland's town hall forum March 25 at Enterprise School was to advocate for an "improved" animal/pet shelter. The current "alleged" shelter for lost, abandoned or homeless pets is in the dark ages. This "holding tank" is a three-sided building, open to the elements, with freezing conditions in winter and boiling hot temperatures in summer.
The nonprofit group Adopt Shelter Animal Pets (ASAP) has come alongside the city trying to improve conditions for animals already traumatized by the doggy/kitty jail and help the city budget with resources and volunteers. ASAP has helped foster, adopt and treat pets from the "shelter" but it's not clear whether the city appreciates this assistance.
West Richland has failed to partner with other jurisdictions to prioritize the lives of these animals. The "shelter" is substandard, and pet lovers in the city are disappointed.
