This year, I would like to see my state Legislature be the first governing body in the country, maybe the world, to take a crash course about climate change. We have expert knowledge of the climate available right here at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The course might be called O.J.T. on Essential Climate Understanding.
For example, there might be a mandatory in-depth factual lecture for all representatives to be conducted, say alternate weeks throughout the coming year, until the topic of climate change is no mystery to a single one of our governmental representatives. Their decisions could then be based on the best accredited, international understanding (rather than everyone's personal viewpoints) of the most urgent issue in the world today. (If it was televised, everyone could learn with them!)
As a retired teacher, I believe in the power of education. Whether leader or citizen, we need to understand climate change, make wiser choices, use less and save some good for our grandchildren.
