I have a nit to pick with Len Shure (Letters, Dec. 30). He states that any disagreement with liberal ideology is characterized as hate speech. Quoting the Bible is hate speech. Et cetera. I claim that if you want to not be accused of hate speech don't use hateful language. I have yet to hear a conservative oppose liberal ideology without couching it in terms of sin and evil.
For the record, quoting the Bible is not hate speech. It's interpreting the Bible into a narrow viewpoint that stigmatizes and demonizes other human beings that is hate speech. Look at Pope Francis. He's been quoting the Bible in such a way that has so-called Christians on the attack. But it has liberals singing his praises!
Rush Limbaugh once called Sandra Fluke a slut because she dared to ask for affordable access to contraception. Who was doing the demonizing there?
If conservatives would just disagree with liberals without using inflammatory and hateful words, we wouldn't have to call it hate speech. Remember the Thumper from Disney's Bambi? "If you can't say nothing nice, don't say anything at all." A good lesson.
