West Richland council members who recently voted to extend severance benefits to four city employees who could be terminated without cause are a disgrace. What a waste of taxpayer money from a city that suffers financially as it is. Only one council member had enough common sense and integrity to vote against this ridiculous action that smacks of favoritism.
It's hard to believe that elected officials voted in by people who trust them to make decisions to the benefit of the city could be so easily manipulated and swayed by the mayor. And it all had to do with an unfounded and ridiculous rumor that candidate Merle Johnson might replace one of these four city employees should he be elected.
I hope that in the future, these same council members who are so easily influenced, will think things through, look at what's good for the citizens, take a hard-line approach, then make decisions that are fair for everyone, not a select few.
