The recent government shutdown and the threat of default on our debt go far beyond the Affordable Care Act or any other law. It was an attempt by a small insurrectionist faction of the Republican Party to abolish an established law, not by normal democratic processes as prescribed in the Constitution, but by means of naked extortion. President Obama was absolutely correct in his refusal to bow to such a threat to our democratic process. To do otherwise would have undermined our entire constitutional form of government. Hopefully, the more mainstream Republicans have learned from this experience and will again become a loyal conservative party in opposition to the more liberal Democrats in accordance with the traditional rules of democracy. Having two nearly balanced political forces that are opposed, but able to compromise, is the whole secret of our great success as a nation.
