Letter: Meals on Wheels cuts hurt poor and aging
Your Sept. 22 issue described cuts in federal spending that are being made to the Meals on Wheels program. I delivered meals under this program for several years.
This highly rewarding experience gave me considerable insight into the problems of the elderly as they valiantly try to stay in their homes rather than going into a nursing home. I found that a fair percentage of my "clients" saw only one person that day -- me. I would vary the time I spent with the various clients so as to leave a few minutes to socialize with these isolated people. Much good was done for very few bucks and very little effort on my part.
It grieves me that the dysfunctional machinations of Congress have had such a severe effect on support of the poor and aging -- this will not go down as one of the shining hours of this great nation's history.
