With the hustle and bustle of last-minute back-to-school shopping, let's not forget to think about the safety of our children. Here are some tips on how to keep your children safe this school year:
Teach children to use the buddy system. Whether they walk to and from school or wait at the bus stop, there is always more safety in numbers.
Caution children against taking shortcuts or walking along paths where they cannot be seen nor heard. Walk your child to and from school so that he or she can become familiar with the daily walk route.
Tell them that they should keep a safe distance from cars and other vehicles, including those driven by people who are asking for directions, and under no circumstances are they to get in a vehicle or leave with a stranger.
Never miss a local story.
Be familiar with the people who are involved in your child's life. Be open to the possibility that someone you know or care about may be a predator.
