Another circus is coming to town. Out of respect for the animals, please educate yourselves to circus life. The Internet provides a plethora of animal-training videos (not for the faint of heart), blogs from former trainers and citations issued against circuses by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
An Apology to Elephants documentary is an excellent resource. Training these majestic beasts to perform unnatural acts requires their spirits be broken and their right to life as wild animals forsaken. Circus animals do not "entertain" voluntarily but rather out of fear of retribution. They have no choice.
Animals in circuses spend much of their lives in boxcars and trailers hauled from one venue to the next for months on end. They will die never tasting the freedoms bestowed in their natural environment.
Why not consider taking your child on a trip to a local animal shelter, allowing them the hands-on joy (and service) of walking a puppy or petting a kitten.
Never miss a local story.
Our spirits are diminished when in the company of anything that demeans the life of another.
