I am asking the people of the Tri-Cities to ignore the movie Butler when it is released on or after Aug. 16. The movie has a terrific story but the problem I have as a Vietnam veteran is that Jane Fonda was cast as Nancy Reagan.
It is amazing that the producers and director did not even think that casting her as the wife of the conservative president would be a problem. Seeing this traitor, who gave comfort to the North Vietnamese enemy, pretending to be Nancy Reagan would make the movie worthless to me.
For more than 25 years, I did not talk or think about my Vietnam service because of the bigotry of the entertainment industry that made Vietnam vets baby killers, rapists, drug addicts and mass murderers. Not until my youngest daughter asked me a history question, "You were in Vietnam, Dad, what was like?" did I even think about it.
And the most frightening thing was that I didn't have the words or any idea of what to say to her because I had put it away from my mind after leaving in 1969. And anyone who knows me knows that I always have words and ideas!
Never miss a local story.
