A widely accepted belief is that the U.S. economy is in the dumps. The national debt is well over the $16 trillion and government spending is through the roof. Who is to blame for this mess?
I contend that the U.S. citizens are to blame. Americans complain constantly that certain elected officials are to blame for the bad economy. But who put those people in charge in the first place? The American people did.
One of philosopher John Locke's principles is that a legitimate government can only be run effectively if given consent by the governed. Well, U.S. citizens are the governed, and when elections come around, we continue to give consent to these specific officials keep on spending.
It's similar to a parent entrusting their candy loving child with their paycheck then sending the child into a candy store. When the child ends up spending all the money on candy, is the child to blame, or the parent who did not know that the child had a sweet tooth.
Never miss a local story.
It is time for Americans to take responsibility for the "children" voted into office, "ground them" and vote responsible adults into office who can be trusted with such matters.
