DON MIKSCH, Kennewick
I am thankful there are events such as the Alternative Gift Fair conducted by the Unitarian Church in Pasco.
It included "Giving the Gift of Sight" as one of 15 local charities in this year's event.
The idea behind the Alternative Gift Fair is to make a donation in the name of a friend or relative to a charity instead of giving a "thing." The fair was a great success: It raised more than $18,000 -- an increase of 20 percent over last year.
Never miss a local story.
Giving the Gift of Sight received more than $1,700. This amount will restore sight to 35 of our fellow human beings blinded by cataracts in rural Ethiopia.
This project is headed by Dr. Jim Guzek, a local eye surgeon with enthusiastic support by Tri-Cities Sunrise Rotary Club and the entire community.
A big thank you to all who gave. It is not too late to give the gift of sight: Call me at 551-0969 for information.
