TRACY WITECK, Kennewick
"O Little Town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!"
God bless the 138 members of the U.N. General Assembly who voted to grant Palestine a non-member observer state status. This was a positive, symbolic act that gives respect, hope and incentive for Palestine to come back to the peace talks.
In contrast, Israel announced their plans to freeze $100 million in tax revenue rightfully due the Palestinian government. They also announced plans to construct 3,000 additional units of Jewish housing in the Palestinian West Bank. These actions do not invite peace; they oppress and provoke.
Supposedly, our government does not favor Israel's building of settlements in Palestine. Yet, the U.S. gives $3 billion dollars annually to support Israel's military strategy which includes building miles of 27- foot-tall concrete walls to surround and separate Palestinian cities from these encroaching Israeli settlements.
Having recently spent six days in wall-enclosed Bethlehem, I know the people there are still waiting for the words of the song, O little Town of Bethlehem to come true: "The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight." May hope overcome fear and bring peace.
