George Washington's proclamation on Thanksgiving (Our Voice, Nov. 22) means a lot. It should be taught in every classroom and home in America and to anyone moving to America. It reminds and teaches us of the true reasons our Founding Fathers worked so hard to bring freedom to our nation. And how we should love, honor and respect these reasons by giving our thanks every day.
I grew up in Richland and remember when everything would close on holidays. Our families would be together to make these days special. I still have great memories of those days.
What kind of memories will today's children have? Of family members who also had to work? Of family members who found it more important to stand in line or shop for things on sale? Memories like these certainly won't be ones they'll cherish all their lives. Neither will the many things being bought.
Never miss a local story.
I believe there were a lot a years when no paper was published on this day. I hope you can do this again someday.
