MATTHEW RUANE, Richland
I would like to thank Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5785 in Kennewick for holding the Patriots' Pen essay contest. In the annual essay contest, middle school students across the whole of America write on a specific, civic-minded topic.
This year's topic was "What I Would Tell America's Founding Fathers?" I encourage all teachers and parents who would like to get their children writing more to look up "Patriot's Pen" online. What a great program!
Essays from my McLoughlin Middle School students in Pasco and others were judged by Post 5785. All winners were invited to a special presentation. There, surrounded by family, friends and veterans, the students were acknowledged for quality composition. What a great, real-life lesson!
Never miss a local story.
Post 5785 has forwarded our local student's essays onto district and from there, they may go on to nationals.
Hats off to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and especially Annabelle Wall and Barbara Wright, who perform yeoman service to keep the Patriot's Pen contest "flying" every year.
