HARRY PORTER, Kennewick
Inflation -- groceries are up, transportation of all goods is up. Corn products have greatly inflated the price of many things. The reason is general farm subsidies to produce ethanol by corn fermentation to be added to gasoline.
The main rationale is to reduce carbon dioxide in the combustion of gasoline.
Leave gasoline alone. Do not add ethanol. Mileage is 10 percent greater without it. Small engines are being damaged. Medium grade gasoline is now needed to do the job of 87 octane at an extra cost of 10 cents per gallon.
If ethanol is mandated (shoved down our throats) do not make it from our farms for about about $2.50 per gallon. Get it from Brazil for 50 cents per gallon. Or better yet, make it from the ethylene that already exists in crude oil! No carbon dioxide is produced in this process! Most of our industrial ethanol is produced this way.
E-10 gasoline produces more carbon dioxide in the long run that just plain gasoline! The fermentation of corn also produces much carbon dioxide. Do chemistry 101 and run all the chemical formulas involved. More carbon dioxide is formed.
How did your House and Senate members vote?
Conclusion: We are being given false information. Corn ethanol does nothing but line the pockets of politicians and corn farmers. High prices are felt by everyone!
