I am writing in response to the recent article about Bill Gates' efforts to eradicate polio by 2018. The issue I have with this article is that the original program, "Polio Plus," was started by and supported worldwide by Rotary International in 1985. The vaccine is distributed and given by thousands of Rotarians annually. The driving force behind the effort is Rotary International.
I and many other Rotarians extend our heartfelt thanks to Bill and Melinda Gates for their generous contributions to the Polio Plus program. Without their help, it would have taken longer for the program to be successful. And as the recipient of the first vaccine in 1955 and now a participant since 1985 in Polio Plus, it is profound to think, "We are this close."
Only three more countries left in the world with reported cases and we can eradicate a killer disease. With the help of the Gates Foundation and even Tri-Citians who buy Duck Race tickets, we can help put an end to polio.
