I could hardly keep from laughing at the figures thrown out by Jane Fox (Letters, Aug. 15). She wrote that under President Obama federal spending has grown by 1.4 percent a year.
So what? The national debt went from $11.9 trillion on Oct. 1, 2009, (the start of his first official fiscal year) to the current total of $15.9 trillion. That calculates out to 33.5 percent in real numbers, or a little over 11 percent yearly. Those figures come from the U.S. Treasury Department at www.treasurydirect.gov.
