Here are just a few of the reasons I will be voting to approve Referendum 74 to uphold marriage equality in November.
Gay couples have the same needs and responsibilities as straight couples and should have the same legal protections. Children being raised in same-sex households deserve to have married parents just like their friends raised in opposite-sex homes. Gay youth should be able to dream about their future and their relationships without being told that they will have to settle for an inferior substitute for marriage.
I know some people believe that the current domestic partnership law provides sufficient recognition for gay couples, but only marriage says, "We are a family," in a way that everyone understands. Planning your "perfect domestic partnership" ceremony or your "golden domestic partnership anniversary" party just doesn't have the same ring. Everyone knows what marriage means, and all loving, committed couples regardless of their sexual orientation deserve to share in that meaning.
Please join me in voting to approve R-74 on Nov. 6 and demonstrate once again that the people of Washington stand united for equality.
