(Continued from last month) During President Hoover's administration (1929-33) hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens (mostly of Mexican decent and referred to as the Mexican Repatriation) were rounded up and deported. This was to open thousands of jobs in America. It is hard to believe, but even the white population worked in the fields.
The Depression had started to turn around, but protectionist policies such as trade tariffs were put up to prevent foreign goods from coming into the country. Banking and Wall Street regulations were introduced. It was told that government interference caused the Great Depression to last an additional eight years. They no longer teach in school that the rest of the world's economies had turned around a lot sooner.
Frighteningly, a lot of this seems to be happening again. Too bad many of these lessons are lost in the classrooms.
