Any mass shooting is a terrifying event; the news media cover this exhaustively because it is so unusual. However, we should not allow the actions of a depraved individual to malign the millions of law-abiding gun owners, nor inact gun-control policy out of fear.
There are risks with any worthy undertaking -- this is an inescapable fact of life. Yet the benefits of our Bill of Rights far outweigh the potential risks; this includes the Second Amendment, which in effect gives teeth to all of the other rights under our Constitution.
An overwhelmingly paternalistic government robs us of our right to be self-reliant, including our right to defend ourselves and our loved ones. Government cannot always be readily available to rescue us. And we should not sacrifice a right for a false sense of comfort and security, for one day we may find these niceties replaced with tyranny and the loss of more rights.
Disarming the people unfairly shifts the balance of power to criminals and government, the latter being people having the same human weaknesses we all share, and potentially prone to corruption that power sometimes brings. Instead of complacently relying on government to do everything for us, we must be vigilant to insure that government does not take everything from us.
