The advice on what to do if you realize you have been in contact with poison ivy or poison oak in the June 22 Home & Garden section can be improved slightly.
Since the toxin is an oil, wash the exposed areas with warm water and a detergent (liquid dishwashing detergent will work) as soon as possible. The detergent will break down the oil and the water will wash it away.
