I see a wonderful flourishing economy here in the Tri-Cities. I live in Las Vegas, and I am in the Tri-Cities visiting my family. This being an election year, we have heard over and over how government does not create jobs. If you believe that ideology, then just think about how your economy would look if all the funding was taken from the Hanford projects.
Stop and think about how many people work for defense contractors, building ships, airplanes and vehicles. These are mostly good-paying jobs and tend to raise the local standard of living as well as help create private-sector jobs that support these workers.
Southern Nevada is now enjoying 10 percent unemployment, down from 15 percent. I only wish the casino moguls would give up the idea of not using Yucca Mountain for the purpose it was intended years ago, bringing Hanford waste to southern Nevada. This would create some of those horrible government jobs and help rebuild our economy in Las Vegas.
Perhaps some day I would get to see my 2,170-square-foot home be worth at least the amount of the mortgage, which is $170,000, instead of the $123,000 it is valued at now.
By the way, I am injecting public service retirement money into your local economy.
