I recently wrote an open letter to President Obama describing my concerns about the current federal role in public education and steps my friends and colleagues feel must be taken to put us on the right path moving forward.
This journey began with a discussion between a few concerned citizens regarding current federal policy. It was decided that an open letter to the president was appropriate. Once drafted, it was shared with other friends, resulting in a request to add signatures.
The process grew into a completely voluntary, unfunded, word-of-mouth campaign on the internet to gather additional signatures. The website for signature collection is dumpduncan.org.
The result, as of June 1, is the endorsement by 5,649 individuals from across the nation, including parents, educators and other concerned citizens. The electronic signatures gathered were each confirmed by email to ensure real people were signing.
We submitted the letter in the hope that the president will take the recommendations seriously. We believe the present course will destroy the public school system that has helped build the strongest nation on Earth.
Our group will continue to gather support and we expect to send an addendum to the list of signatories later this summer.
