It was with disgust, but not disbelief, when I read that the county commissioners deemed fit to end the Sun Downs Training Center lease.
The fairgrounds were beginning to come alive with rural activities, attended by a large number of this community, and the grounds were better groomed and kept up -- things you would think the county commissioners would appreciate.
But no, they pull the plug.
Do I think the county will step up and continue to offer and maintain these facilities? No, I don't. They'll let them sit unused and deteriorating except for the few days in August during the fair. They should be paying the Sun Downs team for the work and interest it has generated. The activities were generating income for this area, and it would have generated more.
Never miss a local story.
I hope the commissioners reconsider, and if they don't restore the lease, I would hope they at least keep the momentum that center has started. But I doubt they will.
