Sylvan Learning Center of Kennewick won the 2012 Small Business of the Year honor in the Tri-Cities, taking home the Gold Award at the 17th Annual Mid-Columbia Small Business Awards on May 3 at the Shilo Inn in Richland. More than 300 people attended the annual event.
You wouldn't have known about Sylvan's award-winning effort from reading it in the Tri-City Herald. Inexplicably, the Herald didn't cover the story. Nor did the local TV stations.
One local media outlet, however -- the Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business (see its May 2012 edition) -- did cover Sylvan's proud moment -- and hats off to them for doing so.
They ran an excellent article about Sylvan's 19 employees, most of them part-time teachers at Tri-City schools, and quoted Sylvan's owner, Randy Way, on how he has built Sylvan into a small-business award winner.
Never miss a local story.
Snubbed or overlooked by the local media? It's hard to say. But Sylvan Learning Center, winner of the 2012 Small Business of the Year Award in the Tri-Cities, does a great job in helping the children of our community learn.
