The Arab Spring has rounded the plate on all four seasons and is about to lap itself. From the world's very cradle of civilization, Egyptians are voting in elections, which for the first time in its 3,000 years of recorded history are truly free. Historic! Amazing! Wonderful!
In contrast, as regular citizens around the globe rise up to throw off the millennial shackles of despotic rule, the world's youngest and most powerful democracy has lost its ability to lead. Just at the very moment an example of true freedom is so desperately needed, we have stumbled. America, the Earth's beacon of hope, a place, a dream and a promise that lifted the spirits and gave hope to the small, the weak and the down trodden, has lost its savor and tarnished its reputation.
Where is that fabled union of states that fought and won "the good war" and the Cold War? Where is that country that pushed the Marshal Plan and then placed men on the moon?
Instead of leading by example, our government has become a study in dysfunction. When will we as a people stand up and say enough is enough? When will the 99 percent finally say no to the 1 percent? When will we take back our democracy? If there has ever been a time, my friend, that time is now.
