The plain scientific fact is that the Yucca Mountain site, rather than being a secure geologic lockbox for tens of thousands of years, is a sieve.
Chlorine 36 from fallout of Pacific Ocean atmospheric tests of nuclear weapons in the 1950s is found at the level of the storage galleries. This indicates a movement from the surface to the gallery tunnels in no more than 50 years. As the geology between the galleries and the water table is the same faulted and fractured material, the site flunks legally articulated requirements in U.S. Code.
It would be informative journalism for the Herald to cover the scientific reasons why closure of the Yucca project is prudent and necessary, rather than ignoring the science and stirring the pot of polemics.
