Kudos to Rick Engelman for his Sept. 20 letter regarding Ken Lattin and his "accident" on the Highway 395 interchange. I, too, was suspicious of his not being ticketed for the accident. Washington State Patrol decided not to ticket him because "speed was not an issue." Really?
KEPR television reported a total of 82 accidents at this interchange since May 2010. I was sure that all of these accidents resulted in citations. However, before I wrote a letter to the editor, I decided to verify this. My trip to the Kennewick Police station resulted in my being told, "Those statistics are not available," by the officer at the desk. Rather than make an issue of this, it seemed a better idea to just let it lie.
However, Police Chief Ken Hohenberg and Sgt. Lattin need to recognize that sometimes perceptions become reality. And the perception is that there are two standards: one for the public at large and one for those who enforce. I am firmly convinced Sgt. Lattin received special consideration. I just wonder how many others are also.
