I have been a racehorse owner/trainer/breeder for 30 years. I spent most of those years at Sundowns. I have paid stall rent, security deposits (that were never refunded, ever), made all my own repairs and improvements and filled up the stalls with dirt (beyond what our horses dug). All the other horse trainers did that also.
We brought in income. Trainers here train 2-year-olds as well as the older horses that they are running at Portland Meadows. Even if they kept the stall rent the same, it would do no good for trainers to prepare their horses to run. We invest thousands of dollars in these horses. This facility is funded by taxpayers and should be available for all to use. We have paid our way in the past. Perhaps there needs to be a change in management because we are an asset, not a liability. That place should always be open to horsemen. When it is closed, they are preventing more income from coming in and more taxpayers’ money going out.
