The youth who committed the heinous, unconscionable school shooting was a nobody. Some nobodies are made that way with bullying, and abuse. Others are born that way with a defective circuit. The latter can stab their mother and casually finish her half-smoked cigarette without a qualm. They don’t rehabilitate, but they do learn to say that they’ve found Jesus to the parole board.
Nobodies see the press give recognition to those who commit cowardly acts. Perhaps a murder’s picture sells papers; but the unintentional consequence is to give a path out of nobody status. They receive instant infamy, and to them that is better than slogging along as losers and social pariahs.
So how about it Tri-City Herald? Tell the story, but don’t put the loser’s photo on the front page. It just encourages aspiring members of the hall of shame.
