I am compelled to respond to Roy Bunnell’s letter of Feb. 8 in which he implores “Trump Haters” to quiet down and give the president a chance to do his job.
Bunnell states, “Not that I would want blind allegiance, but sullen silence might be a good start.” In his recent Ohio speech, Trump railed against the Democrats who, with uncanny prescience of Mr. Bunnell’s letter, indeed reacted with “sullen silence” at the President’s SOTU speech, thus prompting Trump to describe them as “treasonous.” Hence, the clear expectation is that we clap for him on all occasions (and according to Press Secretary Sanders, “smile” more often).
Mr. Bunnell revises history a tad when he describes Republicans being silent out of respect for President Obama. Was it Republican “silent respect” for the office of president when a Republican (Joe Wilson) rudely called Obama a liar during Obama’s address to Congress? Or when Republicans opposed any legislation emanating from the White House?
So, no, Mr. Bunnell, we “Trump Haters” will continue to resist a president who is taking us to the brink of dictatorship with his autocratic expectations, not because we hate Trump, but because we love democracy and fear for its future.
