Winning politicians are not sworn in until January. Why add a hyper-formal deadline that has no good use, except to spawn waves of litigation over slow mail delivery? Such a requirement would also likely even further suppress an already low-voter turnout. Every time this comes up, the only “benefit” I see is for the news media being able to “wrap up coverage” on election night. This is a trivial concern that does not outweigh the problems with requiring the auditor to receive all ballots by election day.
