Post primary campaign summary reports were due Wednesday for the near three-week-long reporting period that ended Aug. 31, so here’s our roundup of the highlights.
There were three statewide races worth mentioning and nine legislative candidates (seven Democrats and two Republicans) who managed to raise over $20,000 in that time.
Normally, I’d try and offer something insightful in this space. But my eyes are playing tricks on me after staring at all these reports, so let’s just get to the list.
— In the attorney general’s race, Republican incumbent Rob McKenna raised $136,000 to bring his campaign total to almost $1.5 million. He had a balance of over $770,000 as of Aug. 31. Democratic challenger John Ladenburg raised almost $91,000 during the period to bring his campaign total to almost $450,000. He was carrying a balance of $200,000.
— Randy Dorn doubled up Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson by raising $40,000 to her $21,000. Bergeson has outraised Dorn for the campaign $182,000 to $147,000. Neither had much on hand.
— Democrat Peter Goldmark continues to outraise Republican Public Lands Commissioner Doug Sutherland. Goldmark raised $67,000 during the period to Sutherland’s $28,000 and has raised almost $615,000 for the campaign to Sutherland’s $497,000. Goldmark had a balance of $355,000 to Sutherland’s $346,000.
— Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane, outraised all other legislative candidates by hauling in almost $45,000 during the period, raising her total to almost $214,000 as of Aug. 31. She had a balance of $87,000.
— Among those actually running in competitive races, Rep. Geoff Simpson, D-Covington, brought in the most. He raised over $40,000 to push his total to over $171,000 with a balance of almost $44,000.
— Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island, raised almost $34,000 during the period to increase her campaign total to near $196,000 with a balance of $91,000.
— Sen. Margarita Prentice, D-Renton, raised $32,000 to push her total to over $241,000 with a balance of $152,000.
— Rep. Hans Dunshee, D-Snohomish, raised $30,000 to bring his total to over $113,000 with a balance of almost $43,000.
— Rep. Liz Loomis, D-Snohomish, raised over $26,000 to push her total to $162,000 for the campaign. She had a balance of over $73,000 as of Aug. 31.
— Seattle Democrat John Burbank raised almost $22,000 in his bid for an open House seat. He’d raised almost $153,000 for the campaign against fellow Democrat Reuven Carlyle and had over $31,000 on hand.
— Sen. Joe Zarelli, R-Ridgefield, raised over $20,000 during the period to push his campaign total to near $169,000 with a balance of $54,000.
— Rep. Norma Smith, R-Clinton, raised over $20,000 to bring her total to near $96,000 as of Aug. 31 with a balance of near $29,000.
I’ll add to this list if there are any late filers of note.
