Rossi barely overtakes Gregoire in poll

Republican Dino Rossi has a one point lead over Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire in the latest SurveyUSA poll.

You can find it here.

It shows Rossi leading 48 percent to 47 percent. Rossi’s gain over the firm’s previous polls appears largely due to support he’s gained from women. Gregoire led by 24 points among women in May. But in the poll conducted Friday through Sunday Gregoire and Rossi evenly split the female vote.

Rossi narrowly leads among independents 46 percent to 44 percent and is getting 16 percent of the Democratic vote to Gregoire’s 9 percent of the Republican vote.

In the presidential race, the poll showed Republican John McCain continuing to narrow the gap with Democrat Barack Obama. The Obama-Biden ticket leads the McCain-Palin ticket 49 percent to 45 percent. That’s three points closer than four weeks ago and 13 points closer than the firm’s June poll.

The poll was conducted for KING TV in Seattle and KATU TV in Portland.
