Last week Gov. Chris Gregoire’s office issued a press release titled “Gov. Gregoire announces state’s strong bond ratings.” On the Office of Financial Management’s website it was headlined “Two international bond rating firms recognize Washington’s economic performance.”
The news? Fitch Ratings had recently given the state an AA bond rating and Standard and Poors had given an AA+ rating.
“Building a solid economic base for the state is paying off,” Gregoire said.
To be sure, those a solid ratings and, as the press release states, are among the highest given.
Not mentioned in the press release is that the new ratings are unchanged from the previous ratings. Incidentally, those previous ratings from November and December were not touted in a press release even though the S&P rating represented an upgrade.
