The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet with officials from Energy Northwest June 15 to discuss a preliminary finding on emergency response procedures at the nuclear power plant near Richland.
The meeting will be in Arlington, Texas, but the public may listen to it by calling 888-989-4408 and entering the passcode 5456418. The meeting is at 11 a.m. Pacific Time.
An NRC inspection found that revised emergency procedures at the Columbia Generating Station did not meet all safety requirements from June 2014 until March of this year. The NRC rated the finding on its color scale as “white,” meaning it had low to moderate safety significance.
The revision to emergency procedures that the NRC questioned were the result of misunderstanding NRC requirements for highly unlikely events. They included the process for recommending residents near the nuclear plant shelter in place if there was a brief release of airborne radioactive material during an emergency.
