The Washington State Department of Ecology has released the final portion of its draft Hanford Facility Dangerous Waste Permit.
The state permit regulating activities with hazardous chemical waste and waste mixed with radionuclides at the Hanford nuclear reservation is regularly updated with public comment accepted on individual changes. But the releasethis spring of the new sitewide draft permit marks the first time since 1994 that the public has had a chance to comment on the entire permit.
An additional portion of the draft permit covering Hanford's single-shell tanks holding high-level radioactive waste and hazardous chemicals took longer to prepare but now is available.
A public hearing will be held on the single-shell tank portion of the draft permit at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Richland Public Library. It is posted at ecy.wa.gov/programs/nwp/permitting/hdwp .
