Less than a year after Washington State University Tri-Cities began offering a foreign language minor, the university has awarded its first scholarship to a student in the program.
Sophomore Ana Isabel Sandoval Zazueta, who hails from the Tri-Cities, will receive the $500 Kenneth H. Vanderford Scholarship, a release said.
WSU Tri-Cities has the highest percentage of Hispanic students of any WSU campus but only began offering upper division courses in Spanish this past fall.
Along with a minor in Spanish, Sandoval Zazueta is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biology and minoring in chemistry. She grew up speaking Spanish but has refined her speaking and writing with her recent courses and plans to use her language skills in her future career as a doctor.
