A record 5,126 students will be honored at the 26th annual Hispanic Academic Achievers Program at 6 p.m. May 15 at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.
Students in grades 4-12 will receive a HAAP certificate for maintaining at 3.0 or better grade-point average throughout the year. This year’s total number of awards surpasses last year’s record of 4,610.
Twenty-six college scholarship winners will be announced from more than $62,000 donated by HAAP sponsors. The top scholarship is for $10,000.
The keynote address will be given by one of HAAP’s former top scholars, Gabriela Whitemarsh, director for MESA, or Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement, at Columbia Basin College.
In addition, HAAP’s top all-time donor, Dan Frost, will be honored. Frost donated more than $225,000 for HAAP scholarships starting with the program’s inception. He died earlier this year.
