Five former Virgie Robinson Elementary School students who are gradating from high school this year will receive a $1,000 scholarship
The Virgie Robinson Memorial Scholarship Committee announced the winners this week. They are Valencia Guadalupe, Melissa Lopez and Vanessa Gomez from Pasco High School and Noe Acevedo and Maria Yepez from Chiawana High School.
Rickie Robinson, a former Tri-Citian, and his family created a college scholarship named for his mom, one of Pasco’s great advocates for children and education, with the aim to help students who likely believe that higher education is unattainable. To be eligible, students must have attended the east Pasco elementary school named for Robinson’s mom.
The school is made up almost entirely of Hispanic students, many of them English language learners, with nearly all receiving free or reduced-price school meals because of their families' economic status.
