After earning first place at the regional Knowledge Bowl competition on Feb. 24, the Hanford High School and Richland High School Knowledge Bowl teams qualified for the Washington State Knowledge Bowl. The competition was Saturday in Arlington.
The Hanford High team earned first place at the 3A Regional competition. Team members are Shanta Katipamula (captain), Hinako Kawabe, Peter Li, Patrick O’Toole, Cyrus Stephens, and Sean Thompson. The coaches are Jim Wilson and Cathy Stordeur. Hanford High is the defending 3A state champion.
“This HHS team is a great collection of scholar athletes and school leaders,” Wilson said. “They had mixed results at the monthly tournaments, but dominated the regional meet. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
The Richland High team earned first place at the 4A Regional competition Feb. 24 in Kennewick. Team members are: Argo Datta (captain), Nick Avila, Annie Lai, Nathan McDonald, Calling Pe, and Laura Yoshida. The coach is Sandee Stroup.
Never miss a local story.
“This team lost only once in all of the monthly meets this year,” Stroup said. “They are an awesome bunch of brilliant, courteous, and humble kids. It has been an honor to coach them.”
The Knowledge Bowl oral competition is similar to Jeopardy, with teams “buzzing in” when they know an answer. Topics covered include: math, science, history, language skills, literature, geography and current events. The teams are practicing for state.
